The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) today announced significant changes to its calendar. The Tokyo Premier event will be held for the last time in 2013 and will be replaced thereafter by a new tournament in Wuhan, China.
Wuhan, in central China, is the hometown of Chinese former French Open champion Na Li.
Other calendar changes to be made in future years include the upgrade of Birmingham to a Premier 600 tournament in 2014.
The Memphis tournament will move to Rio de Janeiro in 2014 and a new International event will take place in Hong Kong.
This year will see 54 events held across 33 countries. Overall prize money at WTA events (not including the Grand Slam tournaments) will increase by more than 10 per cent from $53.3million in 2012 to $58.7million.
