Updated: Dementieva looking forward to Ana challenge

Elena Dementieva, whom Ana plays in the quarter-finals of the Pacific Life Open today, is looking forward to her first ever meeting with the 18-year-old.

“I watched her a lot last year,” said the Russian. “I think she’s very talented. It’s going to be a tough match for me. She has a great serve and very powerful play. It’s going to be very interesting for me.”

24-year-old Dementieva was just as complimentary about Ana when this website asked her for an appraisal of the Serbian during last year’s US Open. She said at the time: “She’s a very good player. I remember playing in Zurich [in 2004] and seeing her. She’s got an unbelievable game.

“I think she’s very talented. She has everything to get to the top ten. She’s very aggressive, she plays with lots of power. She’s young and isn’t afraid. It seems like she has a good motivation to go forward.”

If Ana is to progress she will surely have to capitalise on Dementieva’s relatively weak service. Not helped by a staggering 45 double faults in her three matches, the Russian has been broken 18 times already here. However, the fourth seed has arguably the very best return game in the world and Ana will have to be on top form if she is to score one of the very best wins of her career so far.

The match is scheduled to take place at 11am local time (8pm CET) on the main stadium court. There will be live coverage on Eurosport or you can follow live game-by-game text commentary on this website.
