Serbia defeats Italy

Ana and Novak Djokovic claimed victory for Serbia in their first tie at the Hyundai Hopman Cup in Perth by beating Italy 2-1. They both won their singles rubbers in straight sets, before eventually losing the mixed doubles to Francesca Schiavone and Andreas Seppi.

Ana gave Serbia the perfect start with a pleasing 6-0, 6-4 win in the first rubber over world No.35 Francesca Schiavone. Although she had to dig deep in the opening exchanges of the match, she quickly assumed the driving seat and dictated terms with her forehand.

Following Ana’s win over Schiavone, Novak Djokovic sealed the tie as he convincingly beat Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-4. Consequently, the third and final mixed double rubber had no real bearing on the outcome of the tie.

The Serbian pair enjoyed their time on court, frequently joking and interacting with the crowd, but could not prevent Italy from winning the match 7-6(4), 6-4.
