Perfection in Monterrey

Perfection in Monterrey

For only the third time in her professional career Ana recorded a perfect 6-0, 6-0 result: she beat world No.116 Marta Sirotkina in the first round of the Monterrey Open without dropping a game.

Sirotkina was playing in only her second WTA main draw match, but one would not have known it from the assured start she made in the opening game: she was solid from the ground and earned a break point.

However, this was to be just one of two game points she would hold; Ana was a model of consistency at the beginning of the match and she just got better and better. By the end of the encounter the 25-year-old was hitting winners almost at will.

Conversely, the Russian's spirit appeared broken and she made a swathe of errors, including a painful double fault on match point.

"I'm very happy," said Ana. "I thought I played very well tonight. It took me a few games to find out what she was doing good and not so good.

"I did a lot with my forehand and my level improved throughout the match."

Ana gave an on-court interview in Spanish and later expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome she has received during her professional debut in Mexico.

She said: "It's huge support. It's so nice to see that. I can see that they really enjoy their tennis and they know a lot about it. I have a great feeling here."

Ana takes on defending champion Timea Babos of Hungary in round two on Wednesday. The match is scheduled as the very last of the day, and is expected to begin sometime after 8.30pm local time (4.30am Thursday Central European Time; 10.30pm Eastern Time).
