Ana won an extraordinary match against world No.8 Angelique Kerber in Dubai. She triumphed 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6) in exactly two hours, winning on her fourth match point.
With the most topsy-turvy of victories, Ana moves into the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Championships, where she will meet six-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams on Wednesday.
Ana led 2-0 early on before Kerber asserted her authority and clinched the opening set. The German hit virtually every ball to Ana's backhand, but it was often sensational, and where possible she got into position to hit some screaming forehands.
Such tactics enabled Ana to level the match at a set apiece, but she fell 2-0 behind in the third set. However, Ana then won three straight games to go ahead 3-2, before earning a 6-5, 0-40 lead (three match points).
When Kerber saved them all, and then recovered from a 5-1 deficit in the tiebreak to earn her own match point, Ana looked an unlikely winner, but she composed herself brilliantly to achieve a thrilling win.
"It was such an exciting match," said Ana, who hit 43 winners and 44 unforced errors against a player who competed in the Doha final last week.. "It could have gone either way and I'm just so happy to be through.
Looking ahead to tomorrow's match against Williams, whom she beat in the Auckland final last month, Ana said: "She's such a great champion and a great player. It's going to be such a tough match but I'm really looking forward to it."
"Matches like this really give you confidence and courage. You guys (the crowd) really helped me a lot. Thank you."
Ana will take on WIlliams sometime after 3.30pm local time on Wednesday (12.30pm Central European Time; 6.30am Eastern Time).
