Ana has reached the semi-finals of the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open in Cincinnati with an impressive 6-1, 6-3 victory over world No.114 Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan.
The 22-year-old hit 23 winners and just 10 unforced errors as she recorded victory in only 57 minutes. She didn't face a single break point during a hugely accomplished performance.
Ana reproduced the same form that had brought her into this quarter-final. She broke the six foot-three inch Uzbekistani at the first attempt, while serving extremely solidly herself.
Amanmuradova was unable to win a single point on her second serve during the first set due to the aggression with which Ana returned. The 25-year-old was thoroughly outclassed, as evidenced by a further break at 4-1.
Ana controlled the first set in all departments, thanks to the combination of strong serves, big returning and classy net-play. It was 6-1 after only 19 minutes.
It would have been folly to change a winning tactic and, sure enough, Ana continued to pressurise the Amanmuradova serve, which brought her another break and a 4-2 lead in the second set.
Ana kept her head cool, which was not easy considering that the temperature was in the 90s, and finished the match in style with a neat defensive lob, to which the Uzbekistani had no answer.
Unsurprisingly, Ana was delighted with her performance when asked about it within minutes of the contest ending. “But it was a tough match, she’s serving really well and had full confidence after yesterday’s win,” she said.
“The crowd was amazing again, I felt lot of support today and the whole week, so thank you all.”
