Ana set up an intriguing clash with fellow former world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki by beating Magdalena Rybarikova from Slovakia 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 in the quarter-finals of the Abierto Monterrey Presentado Por Afirme. It was another indifferent performance by the 26-year-old in Mexico, who could not maintain a consistent level during the 98 minute match.
It took almost an eternity to finish the first games of the match. Ana immediately faced five break points in the opening game, saved them all but was ultimately broken on the sixth occasion. Equally, Rybarikova was instantly troubled on serve and Ana restored parity at the first time of asking. After 13 minutes of play, just two games were on the scoreboard.
Suddenly, Ana shifted up a gear. She reeled off five more games, which took in total just a couple of minutes longer than the two previous ones, and wrapped up the opening set in fine style, holding serve to love in the final game.
The second seed completely collapsed in set two. She won just nine points on serve and was unable to win a game as the Slovakian forced the contest into a third set.
Ana crucially regrouped thereafter and broke her opponent at the beginning of the third set. It proved sufficient to halt the world No.38’s resistance and although Ana had to get rid of two break points, she didn't drop her serve in the decider.
The 26-year-old eventually broke Rybarikova a second time to emerge victorious and reach her second semi-final of the year.
