Ana produced an accomplished performance to beat Italy’s Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of the Rogers Cup Presented by National Bank in Toronto.
Ana made a bright start to the match. She broke the Italian’s serve to love at the first time of asking in the second game, convincingly hitting four straight winners.
Leading 3-0, the 25-year-old fashioned a break point in the fourth game but this time, she was unable to convert it and Pennetta got her first game on scoreboard instead.
It would prove to be a turning point in the opening set, with the Italian reeling off three games to level the tie. The match was competitive until 5-4, when Ana converted her fourth set point on the Pennetta serve.
Break point opportunities were prevalent in the second set too, and the scoring followed the same pattern as set one, as Ana moved 3-0 ahead only to be pulled back to 3-3.
Despite being troubled by a right leg injury, Ana always looked like the player more likely to move ahead. The 16th seed forced 12 break point opportunities – of which she converted two – and dropped serve just once to wrap up victory after nearly two hours of play.
Ana will take on world No.5 Li Na from China in round three on Thursday. The match is scheduled to take place sometime after 1pm local time (7pm Central European Time).
