Ana was unable to reproduce her recent form and was toppled in three sets by defending champion Timea Babos in the second round of the Monterrey Open.
Babos defied her ranking of 123 with some heavy serves that immediately put Ana on the back foot. It was clear very early on that Ana was going to have her work cut out, in contrast to just 24 hours previously when she triumphed 6-0, 6-0.
The Hungarian moved into a 3-1 lead as Ana misfired, but the former world No.1 hung on and levelled at 4-4. However, Babos earned a crucial break in the 11th game and closed out the set.
Ana showed flashes of her Miami form in the second set, racing into a 4-0 lead and securing the set 6-3.
She was in the ascendancy and broke at the beginning of the third set, but Babos re-discovered her brilliant serving and turned the tide. In contract, Ana's timing went away and the result had an air of inevitability once Babos had re-established her lead - she looked the more confident player.
The Hungarian duly recorded her seventh straight victory in Monterrey after an hour and 49 minutes.
