Ana falls to Kerber

Ana lost 6-4, 6-2 to world No.9 Angelique Kerber in the third round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. It was a frustrating defeat for the 25-year-old, who converted just one of her five break points and served seven double faults against a player she has beaten twice this year.

The opening game was one of the few bright spots from Ana in the match. She convincingly held serve to love - firing four first serves including an ace - but thereafter her serve began to falter. In fact, she won just two points on her second delivery during the opening set.

The 11th seed was broken for the first time in the third game, but managed to undo it instantly before dropping her serve once more in game five. Ana was unable to recover as the remaining games went with the server and Kerber capitalised upon her fourth set point.

The fourth game of the second set proved crucial for the further outcome, as Ana couldn’t take advantage of two break opportunities that would have enabled her to take a 3-1 lead. On the contrary, it was Kerber who forced the breakthrough in the next game after Ana double-faulted while facing a break point.

The German was able to keep her cool at the key points and got rid of another break chance for Ana in game six, reeling off four games to finish the match in 75 minutes and reach the quarter-finals.

Ana now heads to Beijing for the China Open.
