Ana edged out by Li

Ana saw a 5-2 final set lead evaporate as she was defeated 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(5) by fourth seed Na Li in the third round of the Rogers Cup Presented by National Bank in Toronto.

Ana’s campaign at the Rogers Cup Presented by National Bank in Toronto ended in the third round as she fell 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(5) to world No.5 Li Na from China. Despite holding a 5-2 lead in the decider, the 16th seed was unable to close it out: she was broken while serving for the match and eventually lost the tiebreak.

Ana began the match in high class fashion, breaking the Li serve on her third break opportunity in the second game. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old immediately surrendered her advantage but nonetheless, good signs were noticeable from Ana’s racquet.

Indeed, Ana dictated terms during the rallies as she prevented her co-former French Open champion from playing her beloved attacking tennis. The 25-year-old scored another break in the sixth game thanks to some great returns and she wrapped up the set on her serve, converting a fourth set point.

Ana opened the second set with the same flair. She fired a forehand return winner down-the-line during the first point and broke the Chinese some minutes later. However, Li significantly increased her level, breaking back straightaway as she cut down the unforced errors from 16 in the opening set to just four in set two. Li won six straight games to take the intriguing clash into a deciding set.

A morale-boosting hold of serve in the first game of the third set appeared to be a key point in the match. Ana then got her nose in front and surged into a 4-1 lead after she had broken Li in the second game.

At 5-3, Ana served for the match but Li didn’t let down, breaking back and forcing a deciding tiebreak.

In the tiebreak, Ana fell 3-0 behind, recovered to 5-5, but lost the two next points and consequently the match, hitting a backhand long on match point.

The 25-year-old now heads to Cincinnati for the Western & Southern Open.
