Ana defeated by Radwanska

Ana is out of the Qatar Total Open in Doha as she was beaten in the third round by fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. The 25-year-old significantly improved her level after dropping the first set, but was unable to prevent Radwanska from winning 6-1, 7-6 (8-6).

The windy conditions in Doha weren’t conductive to Ana’s attacking gameplan. The 13th seed never found her rhythm during the opening set and piled up the unforced errors, while across the net Radwanska could rely on her characteristic solidity. That greater consistency and playing with more margin for error proved the key for success as the Pole comfortably took the first set.

Ana entered the second set after a short consultation with coach Nigel Sears and held serve for the first time in the match. It boosted her confidence and she started to freely hit her forehand to all corners of the court.

Although Ana had to fight off five break points in the second set, all service games went with serve as the pair leveled at 5-5.

Ana seemed to score a decisive breakthrough as she broke Radwanska in the 11th game, but she was unable force the contest into a decider. She served two double faults and straightway surrendered her service game just minutes later.

In the tiebreak, Ana kept pace with the Pole until 6-6, but couldn’t avert a second match point.

Ana will now head to the United Arab Emirates, where she will compete at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in, starting next Monday.
