Ana got her 2014 U.S. Open campaign off to the perfect start with a 6-3, 6-0 win over world No.45 Alison Riske.
Opening up Day Two’s play on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Ana got off to a shaky start: she was broken in the first game.
However, the 26-year-old broke back immediately and soon opened up a 4-1 lead.
To her credit, American Riske maintained a high level of intensity. Her head didn’t drop and she got to 3-5 before Ana closed out the set.
A break in the opening game of the second set gave Ana full control of the match.
However, Ana fell 0-40 behind on her own serve in game two. With her back against the wall, she produced the goods, serving three aces while winning five straight points and consolidating her break.
She did not drop any further games and triumphed after an hour and five minutes. “It was very tough first-round match,” said Ana.
“We had a tough one in Auckland. I knew that coming into today's match. She had a good run last week, so I really tried to start sharp and tried to play my game to put pressure on her.
"It took a little bit to adjust. The game was very heavy conditions out there today. I was very pleased, especially the way I finished the second set.”
Talking about her season in general, eighth seeded Ana said: "The confidence is on a high level. I had a great season behind me. Still I work hard for each match, and I do that because I love it.
"It's the same. I don't want to take anything for granted. I really enjoy being here. Like in Paris, as well I had a great leadup and quite a disappointing loss. But, it's a new tournament, new situation. I really want to enjoy each match."
Ana takes on Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the second round on Thursday.
