Sydney, Australia (Sports Network) - Sixth-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova was among the winners during Sunday's first-round action at the $600,000 Medibank International tennis tournament.
Kuznetsova moved into the second round with a 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 win over Shinobu Asagoe of Japan.
Other winners on Day 1 included Russian Maria Kirilenko and Ana Ivanovic of Serbia and Montenegro. Kirilenko, a quarterfinalist in Auckland earlier this year, was leading Gisela Dulko 6-4, 3-0 before the Argentine was forced to retire due to an abdominal strain, while Ivanovic blasted Chinese Shuai Peng 6-2, 6-4.
Kirilenko will meet fourth-seeded countrywoman Nadia Petrova, while Ivanovic has a second-round bout with second-seeded Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo.
Belgian Kim Clijsters is the No. 1 seed for this week's tournament that will pay the winner $95,500.
